The Savannah River's location 18 miles from the Atlantic Ocean determined the city's strategic position. This city of 147,000 sits at roughly 50 feet elevation on the coastal plain of southeastern Georgia. Humid subtropical climate creates hot, oppressively humid summers averaging around 90°F and mild winters in the mid-50s. General Oglethorpe's original 1733 plan organized Savannah around a series of squares, 22 of which survive today, creating the distinctive urban layout.
