The Taunton River formed at the confluence of the Town River and Forge River, giving this city of 59,000 its name and original industrial power source. Taunton sits at roughly 40 feet elevation in southeastern Massachusetts, about 40 miles south of Boston. New England continental climate brings cold, snowy winters averaging around 30°F and warm, humid summers reaching the low 80s. The relatively flat terrain characterized by the river valley extends through the area. Taunton developed as a manufacturing center, with much of the historic industrial architecture preserved along the river's edge.
